“Today, I received the favorable point of view of the government at my initiative and my liberal colleagues to amend Law 217/2003 on preventing and combating domestic violence – a step that shows that the fight against violence is a priority.”Alina Gorghiu said on her Facebook page.

According to the former minister, the most important change refers to the violation of the protection orders. Thus, if an aggressor has already violated an order and does it again, the limits of the punishment will be increased by half

“It is a harsh but necessary measure, to discourage recurrence and to show that violation of orders does not remain without consequences”said Alina Gorghiu.

She also stated that other important changes include the fact that the provisional protection orders will no longer cease, but only by a court decision, that the victim will benefit from mandatory legal assistance and to challenge the order and that a new protection order can be requested not only by the victim, but also by the prosecutor, authorities or social services.

“The context shows how necessary these changes are: in the first 7 months of 2025 there were almost 28,000 police interventions, over 8,000 protection orders, and thousands of aggressors violated these measures. Most cases remain” hitting and other violence “and” threats “she said.

According to her, the proposals are in accordance with the People's Advocate Report and complete the project „Romania without violence”, Again “Together, these laws will give the victims a real and effective protection.”

“Domestic violence can no longer be treated as a private problem. By these changes, the message is clear: the victims are protected, the aggressors will respond harder for their deeds.”concluded Alina Gorghiu.
