September 25 in schools. The latest doubts about health education

Health education is to be an interdisciplinary subject, including knowledge in the field of medical, social, natural and humanistic sciences. The curriculum takes into account various aspects of health – physical, mental, sexual, social and environmental – at all stages of life.
Lessons will take place in primary schools (classes IV-VIII) and secondary schools (high schools, technology, 1st degree industry schools). In primary schools, one hour a week is scheduled, and two hours during the entire teaching cycle. In private schools, the number of hours cannot be less than in public facilities.
September 25, health education. Controversy and social pressure
Originally, health education was to be compulsory, but after social protests, including church environments, it was decided on its optional. Education Minister Barbara Nowacka admitted that the change results from the need for “school protection against a political row”. The decision was announced during the presidential campaign, which further heated emotions.
Organizational problems in schools
The Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP) warns against organizational challenges related to the introduction of a new subject. School directors signal difficulties in arranging lesson plans, especially since health education has no provisions regulating its location in the class plan. Classes can take place in inter -departmental groups with a maximum of 24 students, and in the case of topics related to maturation or sexual health – in smaller groups.
Parents who do not want their children to participate in classes must submit a written resignation until September 25. Adult students can do it themselves. The Ministry of National Education emphasizes that this term is to improve the organization of school work, but the resignation will only apply to a given school year and cannot be undone.
Classes will not be evaluated and will not affect the promotion to the next class or graduate.
