Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Sunday promised a “strong response” given to anti -corruption protesters, after five consecutive evenings of confrontations between his supporters, police and protesters throughout Serbie, reports Agerpres.
Violence broke out in Belgrade and other cities during five days of demonstrations, some of the protesters launching pyrotechnic stones and devices to law enforcement, who replied with grenades and tear gas.
Over 130 policemen have so far been injured and dozens of civilians needed medical care, nationalist president Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday during a press conference in Belgrade.
On Saturday, clashes took place in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Valjevo, where a small group of masked individuals attacked and set on fire, empty at that hour, of Vucic's Serbian progressive party (SNS).
The protests in Serbia continue – the offices of the ruling party have been burned
Vucic calls the protesters “terrorists”
“You will see the total determination of the Serbian state. We will use everything that is at our disposal to restore the law, order and peace,” said President Vucic. He added that the government needs a few days to prepare the “legal and formal framework” of its response.
“It will be very different from what you have seen so far,” he said, stressing that the proclamation of the emergency is not taken into account.
Vucic compared the protesters with “terrorists”, a term that he often used since the outbreak of the anti -corruption movement.
The demonstrations are regular in this country in the Balkans after the collapse in November last year of part of the concrete ceiling of the Novi Sad station. The tragedy, which resulted in 16 dead, was quickly attached to corruption by protesters.
The claims of the protesters, who demand a transparent investigation, have extended in the meantime, demanding early elections.
Aleksandar Vucic rejects calls for early elections, denouncing a foreign plot meant to overthrow his government.
The President of Serbia refuses the anticipations and threatens with new arrests after the protest in Belgrade. “No negotiation with terrorists and those who wanted to destroy the state”
