While US President Donald Trump receives Vladimir Putin in Alaska for negotiating Russia's war against Ukraine, the symbolism of official reception has caused a real storm in the Ukrainian public space.
A photo in which the American military are surprised to kneel to fix the red carpet near the presidential plane of Putin has gone viral after being distributed in social networks by Mustafa Nayyem, a Ukrainian journalist.
Next to the image, he ironically noted the slogan: “Make Kneeling Great Again” (“Do the kneeling again”), an allusion to the famous Donald Trump.
The video in which the American soldiers appear was broadcast including the Russian news channel “Zvezda”, controlled by the Russian Defense Ministry.
In the Ukrainian public space, the scene has aroused strong reactions, being seen as a symbolic transfer of America in front of Russia.
Among the comments posted by Ukrainian users are:
* “The terrorist stretches the red carpet!
* “Shame!”
*”I imagine what a Ukrainian military man would have done if he had been there.”
* “It is a historical capitulation, which will enter the history textbooks of the Russian Federation.”
* “I would have made the carpet with bleeding paint.”
Many of those who reacted say that the reception of Putin's protocol on American soil – with red honors and carpet – contrasts painfully with the reality on the front, where the Russian army continues the bombings on Ukraine.
Images with American soldiers on their knees were interpreted in Kiev as a message of weakness, at a time when Ukraine insists that only the firm military and diplomatic pressure could stop the Russian aggression.
