The Ukrainian army has announced that it has pushed Russian forces two kilometers in the Sumî region, northern Ukraine, in which Russia controls about 200 square kilometers, Reuters reports.

“The Ukrainian soldiers continue the fighting action for the destruction of the enemy and the liberation of our localities,” it is said on the Facebook account of the General Staff of Ukraine.

The quoted source mentions that the battles were held in the villages of Oleksivvka and Iunakivka, 5 km, respectively 7 km from the border with Russia.

The fluctuations of the front lines have gained great political importance in the last days when Ukraine is at a critical diplomatic moment as US President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to mediate a war.

The US president said that he and President Vladimir Putin have “established” that there will be no armistice and that he will focus on a quick agreement to cease the war started in February 2022.

Earlier this week, Russian troops advanced up to 10 km in the Dobropilia area of eastern Ukraine, causing fears about a large front of important cities.

Subsequently, the Ukrainian army said he managed to reject the assault and push the Russian troops back. President Volodimir Zelenski described Russian penetration as a failed attempt by Moscow demonstrate on the battlefield before the Summit between Putin and Trump.

He estimated that other attempts will take place in the next period. “We anticipate in the following days that the Russian army could try to intensify the pressure and blows against Ukrainian positions to create more favorable political circumstances for negotiations,” said the Ukrainian president.
