The wife of US President Donald Trump, Melania Trump, raised the problem of the difficult situation of children in Ukraine and Russia in a personal letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, two white house officials revealed for Reuters.
President Trump personally handed him Putin's letter during the Alaska summit, the sources of the International Press Agency said. Melania Trump, originally from Slovenia, did not participate in the trip to Alaska.
The officials did not disclose the content of the letter, only mentioning that it referred to children's kidnappings during the Ukraine war.
The abduction of Ukrainian children by Russia was and is an extremely sensitive topic for Ukraine.
Ukraine has qualified the abductions of tens of thousands of Ukrainian children taken to Russia or in the territories occupied without the consent of their families or tutors as war crimes that fall into the definition of genocide in the UN Treaty.
In March 2023, the International Criminal Court (CPI) issued arrest warrants for Vladimir Putin and the Russian commissioner for the rights of the child, Maria Lvova-Belova, for the crime of deportation of Ukrainian children.
Previously, Moscow claimed to protect vulnerable children in the war area.
The United Nations Human Rights Office said that Russia has caused suffering for millions of Ukrainian children and violated their rights from the beginning of Ukraine's large-scale invasion in 2022.
