A second contingent consisting of 40 Romanian firefighters arrived on Saturday in Greece, to change the herds that, in the last two weeks, have participated in fire extinguishing and monitoring actions in the east of Athens.

“Today, August 16 AC, the second contingent of 40 firefighters came to Greece to change the herds that, in the last two weeks, have supported the Greek authorities through extinguishing and monitoring activities with fire risk in the east Athens,” is the announcement transmitted by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU).

The first contingent, which sums up 40 firefighters, will return to the country after teaching the colleagues from the second exchange the nine technical means dislocated on the Greek territory-two special vehicles for the forest fires with a capacity of 3,000 liters, a vehicle of 4,000 liters, one of a large capacity of 10,000 liters, a 5,000-liter, a 5,000-liter, a 5,000-liter Liters, a special radio communications vehicle, a minibus and a container truck – so that the continuity of the actions is ensured in case of situations that require the intervention of Romanian crews.

Where Romanian firefighters intervened

In the last 15 days, the 40 Romanian firefighters in Greece participated in fire extinguishing missions in several areas of the East – Megara, Neos Voutzas, Palaia Fokaia, Charvalo – and carried out activities to know the land and the specific conditions of the interventions, through the high risk.

“These steps have strengthened our reaction capacity and the level of preparation for managing emergencies that can endanger lives and goods. At the same time, firefighters have taken part in training sessions and joint exercises with Greek teams, emphasizing the essential elements of a prompt and efficient intervention in the case of fires,” IGSU.

The activation and operationalization of the specialized module for extinguishing forest fires is carried out for the execution of the specific missions of monitoring and extinguishing the outbreaks on the territory of Greece, in the locations established by the Greek partners.

Between August 1-September 15, 2025, the Department for Emergency Situations within the Ministry of Internal Affairs, through the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, will participate with a specialized national module in extinguishing forest fires at the pre-positioning program organized by the General Directorate for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO). The Assistance Program, funded by the European Union, was designed as a support measure for the Greek communities, severely affected by the devastating fires of previous years. It is part of the new EU policy for the prevention and limitation of forest fires in southern Europe and brings together, this year, on the territory of Greece, operative crews in Romania, Austria, Czech Republic, France, the Republic of Moldova and Bulgaria.

In the summers of the years 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, the fires of proportions destroyed vast surfaces of forest and vegetation in the area of Athens, as well as considerable parts of the vegetation on the Evia and Rodos Islands. The interventions were managed effectively with the support of several European states, including Romania.
