The Armenian authorities announced on Tuesday that Iran president, Masud Pezeshkian, will take a visit to Erevan next week in the middle of the tensions caused by the so-called “Coridor Trump”, a strategic route to the south of the Caucasian country that will be managed by the United States, informs EFE.
“On August 19, there will be a business forum at Erevan to take place during the visit of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masud Pezeshkian, in Armenia,” the Ministry of Economy of Armenia announced on social networks, specifying that the visit of the Iranian president will be held until August 21. President Pezeshkian will arrive in Armenia on August 18th.
“From Iran they expressed their desire to participate in the forum representatives from the industry sectors, road construction, agriculture, supply, pharmaceutics, engineering and light industry,” the Ministry of Economy said.
The visit of the Iranian leader will take place in the midst of the strong dissatisfaction caused to Tehran by the United States between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which provides for the opening of a strategic corridor to the border of Armenia with Iran who will connect Azerbaijan with Enclava SA Nahicevan and then to Turkey.
The corridor, an older fear of Tehran
The Zangezur corridor will be developed by an Armenian-American company based in the US and will be renamed Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (Trump route for peace and international prosperity, tripp).
The US government presents it as a way of regional integration that will promote trade and stability after almost four decades of tensions and intermittent conflicts between Azerbaijan and Armenia. However, Iran sees this project under a completely different light, because it warns about the possibility of American military deployment near its Nordic borders and to lose its influence in the region.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Paşinian has already discussed on Monday with Iranian president Masud Pezeshkian. “The regional communication paths will operate within the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty and jurisdiction of the countries and based on mutuality, stressed the Paisinian Prime Minister,” according to the Herevan.
Iran has opposed this corridor since it was proposed for the first time, in November 2020, in the cease of fire that ended the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
This document stipulated that the strategic transport route will be managed by Russia, whose pacification troops have been carried out in the region to guarantee compliance with the armistice after the War for Control on the Karabah Enccas. However, in 2024, the Russian herds withdrew from the region, a few months after Azerbaijan took control over the entire territory disputed for decades with Armenia.
