The “total failure” of electricity occurred on Monday in Iraq due to “record heat” and an increase in the consumption of electricity, which led to the failure of two transmission lines – the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity informed.

In Baghdad and in the central and southern parts of the country, the temperature reached up to 50 degrees Celsius.
The failure affected, among others Kerbal's province, to which millions of pilgrims bring this week due to a religious ceremony – added the ministry.
Iraq, which is one of the world's largest oil producers, has difficulty providing residents with electricity since the American invasion in 2003 and the overthrow of Saddam Husajna.
In March this year, US President Donald Trump lifted the agreement enabling Iraq to pay for electricity from Iran. Baghdad is also very dependent on energy production on Iran's gas import. (PAP)
