Folk calendar

Pavel Ledostav

On this day the memory of St. Paul the Confessor, who was a bishop in Asia Minor, is celebrated.

In Russia, Saint Paul began to be considered the protector of the sailors of the Russian Navy. The fact is that in 1797 the church named after him was consecrated, and it was there that they began to collect relics that related to the history of the navy.

Pavel was nicknamed the Iceman because it was believed that on his day the water in rivers and lakes was frozen. In this regard, the peasants began to prepare for ice fishing – they took out gear, inspected it, and repaired it if necessary. The ice on the rivers was used to judge the future harvest: “If the ice is in piles, then there will be piles of bread. If it is smooth, then the bread will be smooth.”

If snow fell on Paul, it foreshadowed a snowy winter. The windless weather indicated that we should expect early frosts.

Some predictions were made by observing animals. The owners noticed: if the horses have a good appetite on this day, then they will not get sick in winter; and if the cow gives a lot of milk, then the milk yield will be good at least until spring.
