Putin-Zełenski meeting? Vance: Trump made a great breakthrough

US President Donald Trump often changed his approach to Ukraine; In recent days, the favorable Kiev once again changed in favor of Russia thanks to Trump's announced meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska – wrote the Washington Post.
Trump during the presidential campaign in 2023-2024 did not support any of the parts of the war in Ukraine and only declared that he wanted to end it. Before taking office in January 2025, he repeatedly announced that he would end the war in 24 hours when he became president. As he reminded “WP”, he was to say privately that he would end it, giving Russia part of Ukraine.
Already in February this year. He accused the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelanski of being a dictator without a democratic mandate to exercise power – despite the fact that, according to the Ukrainian law, presidential elections cannot take place when the country is at war, and many Ukrainians due to the armed conflict and Russian occupation would not be able to vote. Trump also suggested that Ukraine was to blame for the Russian invasion, and claimed that the government in Kiev could stop the war if he agreed to negotiate. As he noted “WP”, in Trump's words the “echoes of the Kremlin statements” sounded, and after the meeting of the US and Russia delegation in Riyadh, where Ukraine was one of the topics discussed.
According to “WP”, one of the key moments in Trump's relations with Ukraine was his quarrel with Zełnski in the Oval Office on February 28, in which the Vice President of the USA JD Vance also participated. Trump then told Zelanski that “there are no cards” and “he himself allowed him to find himself in a very bad situation.” The daily pointed out that it was an unprecedented situation, “particularly striking” in the face of the fact that subsequent US presidents categorically opposed the acts of the Kremlin's aggression in the world.
On March 30, the US President said that “he is bad” on Putin for questioning the Zelanski ID to govern, and threatened Russia with additional sanctions for Russian oil, if he could not end the war with Putin. He later added that although he was disappointed with the leader of Russia, he still trusts him. At the same time, he criticized Zelanski, claiming that he was trying to withdraw from the US contract regarding the extraction of Ukrainian metals of rare lands; After tense negotiations, the agreement was concluded on April 30.
On April 24, Trump wrote on his Social Social social networking site that “he is not satisfied with Russian attacks on Kiev.” “Unnecessary and very bad. Vladimir, stop,” he appealed.
Two days later, on April 26, Trump and Zelanski meet for the first time since a quarrel in the White House during the funeral of Pope Francis and have an unannounced conversation. The Ukrainian president later talked about “a very symbolic meeting that can go down in history if we achieve common goals.”
On May 19, Trump's telephone conversation with Putin, after which, “WP” writes – seems to be able to put away the weapon in Ukraine, which opens the way to continue the fighting during the suspension of weapons.
On May 25, Trump tells reporters that “he is not satisfied with what Putin is doing, (he) kills many people.” “I don't know what happened to him,” he added, emphasizing that the Russian politician “knows him for a long time.” On Truth Social he wrote that Putin “went crazy”.
A month later, on June 25, Trump's meeting with Zelanski meeting during the NATO summit in Hague. The US president described them as “very nice”, he said similarly about his interlocutor. After the meeting, the leader of Ukraine reported that he discussed the possibility of Patriot air defense sets by his country.
On July 8, Trump criticized Putin. “Do you want to know the truth? He (i.e. Putin – PAP) is very nice all the time, but it turns out that it doesn't matter,” said Trump. He said that he was planning further deliveries to Ukraine – although, as he noticed “WP”, just a few days earlier the White House announced that the Pentagon suspended the delivery of selected types of weapons.
On July 13, the US President announced that he would provide Ukraine with a modern weapon, including Patriot systems, for which the European Union will pay.
On July 14, Trump puts Russia an ultimatum – if within 50 days it is not possible to reach an agreement with Russia regarding the end of the war in Ukraine, he will announce strict duties towards Moscow and sanctions against its trading partners. The tariff rate can be 100 percent. According to “WP”, the Russian elites begin to worry if Putin has notted his chance. Later, Trump shortened the ultimatum, it is expected to pass on August 8.
On August 8 – on the day he elapsed by the ultimatum against Russia – the US president announced that on August 15 he would meet Putin in Alaska. At the same time, he suggested that as part of a possible peace agreement, Ukraine may be forced to renounce part of its territory.
As “WP” noted, this statement was preceded by “contradictory signals” from the USA. On August 6, Trump praised as a “very productive” meeting of his envoy Steve Witkoff with Putin in Moscow, but a few later raised to 50 percent. duties on goods from India, a significant importer of Russian oil.
Trump did not say whether Zelanski would participate in the meeting in Alaska. The high -ranking official reported “WP” that until now the President of Ukraine has not been invited to them.
