“The largest detention center in history”. Pentagon brings Trump's war against migrants inside a military base

President Donald Trump's administration intends to build the largest federal detention center for migrants in the United States on a Texas military base, the Pentagon announced on Thursday, which is the latest measure of military resources to fulfill their agenda, writes Reuters.

Trump has intensified the arrest of immigrants illegally in the US, has taken hard measures against illegal border and withdrew the legal status of hundreds of thousands of migrants. Since taking over this year, Trump has sent migrants to the Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, although in a much smaller number.

The Pentagon said that the initial plan was to send 1,000 migrants to Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, until the middle or end of August, and then to complete the construction of a center with 5,000 beds in “Weeks and months.”

“After completion, this will be the largest federal detention center in history for this critical mission-deportation of illegal strangers,” Kingsley Wilson reporters told the Pentagon spokesman.

Although the facility is built inside the military base, it is expected that the Homeland Security department will be responsible for migrants.

Detention of migrants in US military base is not a novelty. Even under Trump's Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, the Pentagon has approved a request for hosting children of migrants, unaccompanied, in Texas military facilities.

The Trump administration also builds other facilities to send migrants. A facility with 1,000 beds in Indiana is to be opened and has been nicknamed “Speedway Slammer”.

The Trump administration has praised its actions taken along the border, including the development of active troops, claiming that this is the reason for the drastic decrease of the number of illegal passages of the migrants without documents. Trump made the concerns of voters on immigration a central point of his 2024 re -election campaign.

The number of migrants arrested by the immigration and customs (ICE) service has reached record levels in recent weeks, about 57,000 people being detained after July 27, according to ICE data.
