Italy decided in the case of the bridge to Sicily. It will be the longest one in the world


The construction of the bridge has been considered since the 1960s as a potential impulse for the economic development of the poorer South of Italy. Now the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has given the project a priority status, allocating EUR 13.5 billion for the investment in the next decade.

The bridge is to be 3.7 km long and will become an engineering breakthrough – not only in Europe, but also around the world. Will be adapted to both road and rail trafficoffering an alternative to the currently functioning ferry crossing through the strait.
The project will be conducted by the Italian company Webuild – Giant of the construction industry, known among others from the participation in the futuristic construction of the City of Neom in Saudi Arabia. The consortium estimates that the investment will create about 100,000 jobs in the region.

Although the project raises hopes for economic development, it was not without controversy. Ecological organizations express concerns about the impact of investments on the natural environment, especially since the area where the bridge is to be built is located in the seismically active region.
Despite these voices of opposition, The government decided to give the project green light. In the coming months, intensive preparatory work will start, including geological and archaeological studies.
