Who is Cătălin Predoiu, the new interim prime minister of Romania

Cătălin Predoiu, appointed, on Tuesday, interim prime minister by interim president Ilie Bolojan, is interim president of the PNL of February 2025. He was Minister of Justice and then Minister of Interior in the governments of Tariceanu, Boc, Orban, Ciucă and both Ciolacu offices.
Cătălin Predoiu, 56 years old, is a lawyer, with graduated studies at the University of Bucharest and a specialization internship in France.
The political career began in July 2013, when he enrolled in the Liberal Democratic Party, a party that merged with PNL in 2014. That year, Cătălin Predoiu becomes first vice-president until 2017 and PNL PNL president.
At the 2014 presidential elections, he was appointed as a candidate for the position of prime minister of the Liberal Christian Alliance, and the presidency candidate was Klaus Iohannis. After Iohannis won the first term, Predoiu was no longer named prime minister.
Breaking Cătălin Predoiu was named interim prime minister
In 2016, Cătălin Predoiu applied for the City Hall and ranked third, after Nicușor Dan and Gabriela Firea.
Minister in five governments in a row
Cătălin Predoiu was several times Minister of Justice:
- February – November 2008 in the Tariceanu Government;
- December 2008 – October 2009 and December 2009 – February 2012 in Boc governments;
- February – May 2012 in the Hungarian government;
- November 2019 – December 2020 in the Orban government;
- November 2021-June 2023.
- He was also interim foreign minister in 2009.
Predoiu remained in the Government and after the departure of Nicolae Ciuca, and in the first term of prime minister of Ciolacu he was a deputy prime minister and Minister of Interior. Remained on the same functions in the Ciolacu 2 government.
Predoiu took over the position of president of the PNL in a tense political context, on February 11, 2025, after Ilie Bolojan, interim leader and at the party, after the resignation of Nicolae Ciuca, was appointed interim president of Romania.
Declaration of wealth
In the latest declaration of wealth submitted, the one from 2024, Cătălin Predoiu declared watches worth 20,000 euros and art objects and paintings of 25,000 euros.
The PNL president declared four bank accounts, two at ING, in which he had 34,007 lei, respectively 1,547 euros and two at BCR, one with 580 lei and another with $ 1,313.
He receives, annually, two salaries: one from the Superior Council of Magistracy, worth 55,957 lei and for the position of Minister of Interior, worth 92,659 lei.
Predoiu said he has no land, house, apartment or car.
