As the Russian publication Tass also reports the news of Ion Iliescu's death
“Iliescu was three times head of the Romanian state: in the period 1989-1992, as president of the National Salvation Front Council and the Provisional Council of National Union (Transitional Parliament), between 1992-1996 and between 2000-2004, as president of the country.
During this period, fundamental changes took place in the country: private property was restored, a multipartide system was introduced and human rights and freedoms were proclaimed. In these years, Romania adhered to NATO and completed the negotiations for EU accession.
At the same time, Iliescu was a supporter of constructive relationships with Russia. In 2003, he signed in Moscow, together with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the friendship and cooperation treaty between the Russian Federation and Romania.
Subsequently, the General Prosecutor's Office of Romania charged Iliescu for committing crimes against humanity. Specifically, he was accused that, in December 1989, together with his comrades, he deliberately created an atmosphere of “terrorist psychosis” in the country, which led to armed confrontations and the death of several people, and that he ordered the dispersion of an anti -government demonstration in Bucharest, in June 1990, after which there were victims. Iliescu rejected these accusations, qualifying them as politically motivated. ” Tass reports according to HotNews.ro.
