Stella Rimington: The first woman at the head of Mi5. Her unusual story


Stella Rimington, who died on August 3 this year. At the age of 90, she was the first woman at the head of the British counterintelligence known as Mi5. She was also the first general director of this service, whose name was made public and the first head of this service, who appeared at a press conference.
Rimington began working as a secretary of the MI5 representative at the British embassy in India, when her husband took a diplomatic position there. After returning to Great Britain, she permanently went to work in counterintelligence, specializing in the fight against foreign spies and terrorists. In the 1980s, she was fighting spy nets from the communist bloc countries.
In 1992, she was the first MI5 officer who officially flew to Moscow to meet with Russian special services. In the same year she headed MI5.
When she retired in 1996, she dealt with writing. Almost all her spy novels were bestsellers. In Poland, two novels “AS in the sleeve” and “occupational risk” appeared.
