Poland's prosperity depends on finance knowledge. “Poorer citizens are a poorer state”

Recent studies indicate some improvement in the economic consciousness of Poles, especially about the need to save. However, in the field of investing and available to this tools and the tax system there are still serious knowledge deficits. Poles are aware that raising their competences will positively affect their household budgets, but there is little said that the future prosperity of the country also depends on it. Therefore, financial and economic education should soon become an element of teaching at the earliest stage.

– If young people are to effectively maintain our country, ourselves and future pensioners, we must teach them to work more effectively, invest more effectively and save. This is what we say today – some even say that we are screaming – that the development of economic education is necessary because of the future socio -economic development of Poland – says Newseria Waldemar Przebek agency, president of the Warsaw Institute of Banking, chairman of the Organizing Committee of the National Center for Economic Education.
What has recently changed in the plus of Poles' economic knowledge is The growing awareness of the need to save. The study “The level of financial knowledge of Poles 2025” carried out at the request of the Warsaw Institute of Banking and the WSE Foundation Foundation indicates that according to 59 percent. Poles should be more and regularly postponed on the so -called Burnout. Half of them declare that savings should be diversified. In turn, knowledge deficits can be seen in such important areas as cyber security, investing and tax system.

– Lack of economic education, knowledge and proper attitudes are in the future less competitiveness of our economy and poorer citizens, and poorer citizens are a poorer state. A poorer state is a country that will not be able to achieve its basic goals – indicates the president of WIB.
– We manage to convince a more and wider group of public and private institutions, natural persons that economic education and knowledge is needed by all of us, so that in the future working and living in Poland would be able to earn effectively on themselves, the state and the pension system.
Poles are aware that improving their economic knowledge will translate into saving effects, better household budget management and a greater sense of financial security. This last factor is crucial for the respondents. The report shows that Nearly half of the respondents assess their safety level as average, and every fifth – even worse. Interestingly, a similar percentage is not very positively assessed by its economic knowledge. Every third respondent believes that it is small or very small, and 37 percent. – that average.
– To increase the level of knowledge, competences in the field of economics, finance, entrepreneurship, because we combine these aspects, we must first of all increase the scope of knowledge transferred at the school level. The stage of primary, secondary schools and universities is the main place where we should provide basic knowledge, and in contemporary schools it is not well, especially in primary schools – says Waldemar Wydek.
As he emphasizes, the involvement of schools is the only way to get to this knowledge to the widest possible group of young people. What's more, this should be at a very early stage to build appropriate attitudes among students from the beginning.
– We can argue, whether it should be the beginning of primary school or maybe a kindergarten, but absolutely A secondary school with a new subject of business and management is too late. Already at the moment, the Polish Primary School is prepared to ensure that from an early age, from the first, second, third grade, basic issues and financial, economic issues, entrepreneurship were introduced and that the young man would read it, and in the next stages of education simply developing his knowledge in this area – emphasizes the president of the Warsaw Institute of Banking.
The expert compares economic science to other subjects in schools – there is no hope that students will learn on their own, just like history or physics, even if they need it in adult life. Of course, the exception is a group of interested young people who can become enthusiasts of a given field and experts in it.
– If we all function more effectively in professional and private life, it will be part of the future wealth of society – all, not a few or several percent of those interested in economics. Therefore, basic knowledge, skills in financial management, saving, investing are necessary to everyone, not just those interested. That is why we repeat that the school plays a fundamental role here, because this is the only place where we are all, and probably basic knowledge, competences and maybe skills, just like student cooperatives, can be taken – indicates the chairman of the Organizing Committee of the National Center for Economic Education.
According to the expert, student cooperatives are a chance to learn finances, economics and entrepreneurship in practice, and not only at the level of theory from textbooks. These organizations can be founded and conducted only by students (under the care of a teacher or headmaster) and have a wide range of activities, including Organization of events, workshops, charity campaigns, running a shop, selling healthy food or providing small services to other students. This form of student organization has been operating in schools for 125 years, but is not legally regulated. This is to change the Senate draft amendment to the educational law, on which work in parliament is underway.
