A high-ranking counselor of US President Donald Trump accused India on the effective financing of Russia's war in Ukraine on Sunday by acquiring Oil in Moscow, after the US leader has intensified its pressures on Indian authorities to stop buying Russian oil, Reuters reports.
“What (Trump) said very clearly is that it is not acceptable for India to continue to finance this war by purchasing oil from Russia,” said Stephen Miller, deputy chief of the white house politics and one of Trump's most influential councilors.
Miller's criticisms are some of the most powerful Trump administration about one of the main partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
“People will be shocked to find out that India is practically linked to China in the purchase of Russian oil. It's amazing,” Miller said in the “Sunday Morning Futures” show at Fox News.
India Embassy in Washington has not yet responded to the comment request, Reuters says. But Indian government sources told Reuters on Saturday that New Delhi will continue to buy oil from Moscow, despite US threats.
A 25% customs tariff for Indian products entered into force on Friday, as a result of purchasing military and energy equipment. Trump has also threatened 100% fares to American imports from Russian oil countries, if Moscow does not reach a major peace agreement with Ukraine.
In the intervention at Fox News, Miller, however, tempered his criticisms, mentioning Trump's relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which he qualified as “extraordinary”.
