Petrol and diesel will be expensive from Friday due to VAT and excise growth. The population will be strongly affected, because we are in full summer season, when people go on vacation and fuel consumption is the largest of the year.
Thus, in diesel, from a price of 7.4 lei/liter as it is now at the gas stations in Romania, from August 1, it will cost about 7.8 lei/liter, after 10% increase in excise duty and VAT increase from 19% to 21%. Therefore, the price of one liter of diesel will increase by about 40 money.

The employees of the gas stations with which HotNews discussed on Thursday morning at the first hour told us that it is not known exactly what the new prices will be. “We receive the new prices half an hour before displaying them,” a Petrom employee told us. Subsequently confirmed by the employees of other gas stations.
If the above calculations are correct, it means that, in the case of a 40 -liter tank, a full will cost about 312 lei.
The excise duty for no lead gasoline was until today almost 2.53 lei per liter and will increase from tomorrow to 2.78 lei per liter on August 1, 2025. The excise duty for diesel was almost 2.32 lei per liter, ascending to 2.55 lei per liter.
At gasoline, where the prices are now almost 7 lei on average, after applying the increased excise duty and the new VAT rate, the price could reach 7.50 lei per liter. Therefore, the price of one liter of petrol will increase by 43 money.
These calculations were made by reference the prices now in the market, but it is possible that, on August 1, the pump prices will be different, depending on the oil quotations from that time, the fuel quotations on the wholesale markets and the exchange rate.
We also point out that the volume of the tank of a car varies depending on the model, engine and category. For ordinary cars, the average capacity is 40-60 liters, most cars with a tank of about 50 liters.
Compact models or smaller engines can have tanks of 35–45 liters, and family cars (sedan, break) or SUVs usually reach 50-65 liters.
Premium models or cars with high autonomy can have tanks of 70 liters or more.
The exact capacity is found in the manual specific to the respective model. The producers specify the nominal volume, but in practice it can be easily exceeded due to the manufacturing tolerances and the shape of the tank.
