The European Commission proposed a partial suspension of the Israeli association agreement with the EU to limit the country's access to the key test and development program for start-ups. At the meeting on Tuesday, July 29, the ambassadors of the European Union countries discussed the commission's proposal, but the qualified majority of votes were obtained with its acceptance. Three diplomats informed about it, who talked to Politico, provided that anonymity was maintained.
According to EU diplomats, Germany's support is now crucial. Berlin is increasingly willing to support sanctions against Israel in connection with the shocking reports from Gaza about hunger and violence against Palestinians. However, the German Chancellor Friedrich Merz did not yet express support for the introduction of EU sanctions.
Work on the application regarding the suspension of the association agreement with Israel will be continued. Officials in Brussels will try to get more support for this plan in the coming days and weeks. Diplomats say that there is a possibility that due to the leave of employees of EU institutions and embassies in August, the final decision will be made only after the holidays.
