The Spanish Attorney General, Alvaro Garcia Ortiz, will be tried for violating judicial secrets, after the Supreme Court rejected the last appeal on Tuesday, in a embarrassing file for the head of the government, the socialist Pedro Sanchez, AFP reports.
Garcia Ortiz is accused of disclosing the press information about businessman Alberto Gonzalez Amador, Isabel Diaz Ayuso's partner, the right -wing president of the Madrid region and a vehement opposing of the Sanchez government.
The Attorney General, appointed in August 2022 at the proposal of the Sanchez Government, appealed in appeal the decision to refer by a judge of the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, however, the Supreme Court believed that the evidence gathered during the investigation are sufficient to open a process. The judicial leakage, regarding confidential information that should not have been published, was the result of “an action coordinated and personally led by the Attorney General”, the court says in a statement.
Garcia Ortiz was charged on January 13 in this file, an unprecedented procedure in Spanish judicial history. His accusation occurred after the publication in several media of an agreement to recognize the guilt concluded between the Prosecutor's Office and Alberto Gonzalez Amador.
Gonzalez Amador is suspected of frauduating the Spanish fiscal administration between 2020 and 2021 from the forehead of his company, which provides health services and whose revenues have practically exploded during the coronavirus pandemic.
This complex case caused vehement mutual accusations between the government of Sanchez and Diaz Ayuso, one of the leaders of the People's Party (PP, the right opposition), who denounced a “wild” persecution and accused Sanchez's entourage of organizing these leaks with the help of the prosecutor.
After the decision of the Supreme Court, the PP reiterated his appeals to the resignation of Garcia Ortiz. The date on which the process will start has not been announced yet.
