As the company wrote in a statement, political advertising on Facebook and other platforms will be withdrawn due to too restrictive provisions of the Regulation on transparency and targeting of political advertising (TTPA). According to the finish, the provisions adopted by the European Parliament and the EU Council to come into force from October 10 introduce “impossible requirements and legal uncertainty”.

TTPA will limit the abilities of advertisers in reaching recipients and will make the recipients see less important content – said Meta, declaring, however, that the decision will not affect the possibility of discussion and posting political content by politicians and other users.

The concern pointed out that it is not the only one who made such decisions, indicating the announcement of Google from last year, which also announced a departure from political advertising in the EU.

The regulation criticized by the finish was adopted in March 2024 and is an attempt to harmonize the provisions in the EU regarding the techniques of targeting electoral advertising to individual groups of recipients. Companies such as Meta use data and metadata users for this, which is to make the advertisement reach people who are interested in it. The new regulations are to establish a number of conditions under which targeting would be allowed, as well as increase the transparency about the origin and financing of advertising.
