1990 – Establishing the National Day of Romania
On July 24, 1990, the Senate of Romania adopted the law by which the day of December 1 was established as a national holiday, in memory of the Great Union from 1918. The decision was a moment of historical consensus, in a difficult transition period from the communist regime to democracy.
The adoption of the law on July 24, 1990 has an additional historical significance, as the same day, in 1917, began the battle in Mărășești. This context links the post-communist political decision to a key moment in World War I, when Romania defended its territory before a foreign invasion.
