What the new terminal of the Otopeni Airport will look like. CNAB has launched the auction

The National Airports Company Bucharest (CNAB) has launched the tender for the new terminal of the Otopeni Airport and the related airport infrastructure.

“The National Airports Company Bucharest launches the largest and complex airport infrastructure project in Romania: the procedure for awarding the design services contract for the realization of studies, concept, technical project of execution and technical assistance during the execution of the infrastructure necessary to accommodate traffic forecast for the year 2040 – Stage I for achieving the investment objective “The Strategic Program for the development of the airport infrastructure at Henri Coandă – Bucharest” Airport “. The estimated value of the design and technical assistance services amounts to about 40 million euros. The deadline for submitting offers is June 16, 2025”, Informed the company.

The main objective of this project is to achieve a new passenger terminal at Otopeni Airport with all the necessary facilities, with an area of about 176,000 square meters, to accommodate a forecast traffic for 2040 of 30 million passengers/year (passenger traffic at peak hours in the new terminal will be able to reach 6,500 passengers/hour).

The CNAB vision for the new infrastructure is: International individualized airport; Smart airport through the use of modern AI, IoT, BMS etc technologies, etc; efficient airport – optimal flows for passengers, luggage, aircraft, vehicles, equipment; safety and security by using advanced technologies; passenger experience – comfortable spaces, intuitive flows, various spaces for food & beveras, shopping, lounge; Sustainability and resilience – energy efficient solutions, the use of green technologies with a minimum impact on the environment (for example: reuse rainwater); solutions that lead to the concept of “Healthy Building” (passenger flows, air quality, materials used, HVAC solutions, interior noise, natural light, digital technology, etc.).

The terminal will be designed at the level of the highest airport standards for Schengen – non Schengen traffic, with generous areas of arrivals, departures and transit or transfer of passengers.
The terminal will be made modular, which will allow the stage to be put into operation.

The facilities of the new terminal will be comparable to the big European airports: at least 48 new aircraft parking stands; minimum 20 bridges; Generous spaces for passengers, modern systems of luggage bands (arrivals and departures), security control equipment, separate flows for supply, passenger information, ambient lighting, optimal acoustics, efficient air conditioning and intuitive signaling, protocol salons for the customers of the airlines, all various areas, VI Make “here's Optimum Level of Service”.
The aircraft will have new modern running paths on a new airport infrastructure.
Other facilities that will be made: control tower, PSI drawing, handling areas, administrative buildings, transformation stations, water treatment plants, car parking lots.
There will be a complex network of access roads in the landside and airside areas, to ensure road connections, with roads and underground passages, between the current terminal and the terminal future.
The terminal will have modern taxi and public transport stations, but also special areas for coaches, created to avoid traffic congestion.
The new terminal will be connected to the road and railway infrastructure.
Given the complexity of the project, the designer must use Building Information Modeling in the design process.
The company will have a permanent communication with Stakeholder to ensure the success of the project.
The strategic program envisages, at a later stage, the development of the airport infrastructure necessary for the processing of goods and mail traffic, by making a cargo multimodal platform, as well as creating a high-tech technological park for the development of air transport activities.
