Anthony Bromonosets
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. Anthony of Pechersky, the founder of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and the patron saint of all Russian monks.
In Rus' in Antoniev, the day was given special importance to thunder. If the name of the saint was on Wednesday or Friday, and thunderstorms were heard that day – this promised a good catch of fish. If the thunder on Anthony was sharp, they waited for a quiet rain, and if we were eager to be prepared for a downpour.
They also celebrated the day of duckweed – plants, the small leaves of which can often be seen on the surface of the river. It was believed that mermaids are found in the places of accumulation. “Rain raises a duckweed, and water virgins tear,” said people. The duckweed was collected on Anthony with a pitchfork with the water, the baskets were filled with it and carried to the farard, where they fed birds. They used it as a fertilizer. The girls, in the likeness of the patterns of duckweed on the water, weaved special lace, which were called – rowules.
