The Chief Sanitary Inspector, Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, reported on Sunday morning that in Stargard (West Pomeranian) cholera was diagnosed with an elderly woman. The woman had, among others severe diarrhea.

– Cholera bacterium was detected in a patient from Stargard, and cholera toxin tests are pending. Therefore, he is a person suspected of damn, but only detection of toxin allows the diagnosis of infection – said in the afternoon prof. Miłosz Parczewski, National Consultant for Infectious Diseases, from the Independent Public Voivodship Combined Hospital in Szczecin. It was this institution on Saturday that took over the patient from the Provincial Hospital in Stargard.

He reported that in a few days the results for the presence of toxin should be known. He noted that the material for research was sent to a sanitary and epidemiological station, and breeding in a hospital laboratory is also underway. An attempt to confirm the presence of toxin is “multidirectional”.

Prof. Parczewski emphasized that “in some people, even those non -toxic vibrio cholerae (cholera flags) cause diarrheal symptoms.” He added that the non -toxic strain is detected in Poland “once every few years”. In his opinion, it will be detected more often due to the growing research potential and the changing climate – it is longer warmer, which promotes the commas.

– The patient is currently in a medium stable state, her life is not in danger – he said.

He added that it is treated symptomatically, with dehydration and a lot of fluids are given. Antibiotic therapy was also implemented. In his opinion, convalescence should take “rather a few days”.

Prof. Parczewski admitted that the case of the patient with suspicion of cholera was treated “with full caution.” He pointed out that the sanitary services are obligatory, they determine quarantine and conduct an epidemiological investigation, treating suspicion with a comma infection cholera without confirmation of the toxin strain with or without, as a potential epidemiological threat.

The most important thing is to secure the patient's environment

The Chief Sanitary Inspector Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski on TVP Info, referred to the words of prof. Parczewski about the ongoing toxicity tests of the cholera commurate bacteria found in the patient.

– From my point of view, it does not quite matter at this stage, what a variety of bacteria is. For me, it is crucial to secure the patient's environment, prevent the spread of infection. Because there is no doubt that this patient is treated as infected with cholera. She got antibiotics towards this bacteria – said Dr. Grzesiowski.

Two independent laboratories confirmed the case of cholera at an older woman in Stargard. Sanitary services are looking for a source of the disease – neither the patient nor any of her loved ones went abroad. There are 26 people at home quarantine, under epidemiological supervision – in total 85. As reported in the evening press release, the quarantine is to last 5 days.

In a joint announcement of GIS and the national consultant of infectious diseases, it was announced that the management of the Hospital in Stargard decided to temporarily suspend the admission of new patients and visits present in the Department of Internal Medicine. “Until the final test results are obtained, people covered by quarantine and sanitary supervision are obliged to self -observe health and immediately contact the doctor and the sanitary inspection in the event of disturbing symptoms,” he added.

The last case of cholera in Poland was recorded in 2019 in Świnoujście. In Stargard this is the first such case.

Hazel: results in a few days

In a few days we will find out whether the patient infected with the cholera bacterium is a toxin carrier that causes this disease – Minister of Health Izabela Leszczyna pointed out on Sunday. She emphasized that the patient was under care and the people with whom she had contact came across quarantine.

“This bacterium, (…) It happens from time to time. Does she (patient – PAP) a toxin carrier that causes damn?

The minister reminded, it is different to be an infected bacterium of the cholera comma, and being sick with this disease is different. She emphasized that we are dealing with one case of an infected battery. As she assured, the patient is “absolutely looked after” and the people with whom she had contact are subjected to five -day quarantine in accordance with sanitary procedures. She added that the disease develops within three to five days.

Leszczyna also reported that from Sunday morning she was in contact with both the main sanitary inspector and the national consultant for infectious diseases.

Damn it is a highly infectious disease caused by a bacterium – the cholera comma. It spreads epidemically through water infected by the sick and carriers. Its main symptom is acute, watery diarrhea and vomiting leading to dehydration. Without proper therapy, he can lead to death within just a dozen or so hours. The hell is treated with antibiotics and intense, also intravenous irrigation. (PAP)
