The Israeli army announced on Sunday that thousands of recruitment orders will be sent to ultra -Orthodox Jews, who have so far been exempted from the mandatory military service, a problem that threatens the future of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, writes France Presse and Agerpres.

“The army will start this week to send recruitment orders to complete the enrollment procedures for the members of the ultra-Orthodox community and whose status of Yeshiva students (Talmudic School) is no longer valid after the law expires,” a statement of the army shows.

Mandatory recruitment for ultra -orthodox Jews is a sensitive subject for Benjamin Netanyahu's government.

Formed in December 2022, it is held by an alliance between the Likud (right) party of the prime minister, far -right formations and ultra -Orthodox Jewish parties determined to maintain a military exemption that has become more and more unpopular among the Israeli society after the 21 -month war in the Gaza Stră.

By virtue of an agreement dating from the creation of the state of Israel, in 1948, Haredi men enjoyed a de facto military exemption for decades, provided they dedicate themselves to the entire daily study of Judaism in Yeshive (Jewish seminars).

“A total of 54,000 recruitment orders”

This exemption was challenged by the Supreme Court in the 2000s, forcing successive governments to develop temporary legislative arrangements on ultra -Orthodox, which created and destroyed the coalitions.

From June 2024, the Executive is under the pressure of justice regarding the enrollment of ultra -Orthodox in the absence of a law that will validly guarantee them from the ordinary military service.

“The notifications will be sent in stages during July, reaching a total of 54,000 recruitment orders,” the army statement said.

“The army will continue its efforts to expand the recruitment among the members of the ultra -orthodox public, while ensuring the best possible conditions for maintaining their distinct way of life,” the statement is added.

The ultra -orthodox population represents 14% of the Jewish population of Israel, that is, almost 1.3 million, and about 66,000 men are exempted from the compulsory military service.
