US President Donald Trump will participate in the NATO summit for June 24-25 in The Hague, in the Netherlands, according to an announcement of the White House.
“I can confirm that the president will participate in the NATO summit, yes,” said the white house spokesman, Karoline Leavitt, AFP said, quoted by Agerpres.
Since returning to power, Donald Trump has constantly asked the North Atlantic Alliance members to significantly increase their defense expenses. The US president also criticized his allies on this topic.
The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte has already given assurances that in the Netherlands the 32 member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty organization will announce an “ambitious” growth of their defense budgets.
Donald Trump asks Canada and NATO European countries to allocate at least 5% of GDP, while in 2024 some barely reached the 2% required threshold, notes AFP.
President Volodimir Zelenski will also be attended by the Hague Summit. President Nicușor Dan, who recently stated that it is in Romania's interest to increase the defense budget is also expected to participate.
