Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who is also the interim president of the National Liberal Party, admitted on Thursday evening, in a show at Antena 3 CNN, that his formation “remained with some debts and they must be covered”. He also says that among the election campaigns, the state subsidies granted to the political parties “must be reduced”.

“There are tens of millions of euros that go to the parties every year. And you said that this amount must be reduced. From my point of view, this money should be given during the election campaign. Campaign Electoral means 45 days to 4 years, Otherwise-3 and a half years to give tens of millions of euros to the games,” The closing of the “tap” of money to the political formations, drawing his attention to the fact that PNL has “debts”.

“Our members (from PNL, no) will have to pay contributions, because the party remained with some debts and they must be covered. We have no other possibility,” the Liberal leader reacted.

“I believe that the amounts for parties and between campaigns need to reduce a lot, but a minimum level that allow the training of people who can run on functions, experience exchanges, increasing the qualification of those who exercise a certain position are important things that all the parties in Europe do. But the money spends with priority on these staff training, In Romania in recent years, ”continued Ilie Bolojan.

On Thursday night, in the show from Antena 3, Prime Minister Bolojan was also asked about reducing the number of parliamentarians. “My belief is that if there were fewer parliamentarians, nothing would happen, but they need a majority and do not play political games, I do not explain what some want and what others want, it is clear that now the concentration of coalition was to solve urgent problems. And the number of parliamentarians-he does not solve the problems, but it generates a state of compliance with the perception of the Deformed by things that do not belong to all parliamentarians, but to a minority ”, said the head of the Government.

PNL debt

Hotnews previously wrote during Thursday that PNL, a party with debts of over 30 million euros, received a new blow this week: it has to return 14 million lei to the Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP). The decision came from the campaign of Nicolae Ciuca, from November 2024.

The AEP completed in the spring of 2025 the control reports for last year's presidential elections. The final decisions were sent this week to four parties that have money to return: PNL, USR, gold and the strength of the right. The AEP decision provides in the case of PNL that it must return 14 million lei within 30 days. The amount represents the money used in the presidential campaign of Nicolae Ciuca from 2024 from the party's subsidy.

In December 2024, after the annulment of the presidential elections, through an emergency ordinance of the Ciolacu government, all the finances spent by parties and independent candidates were fully returned.

The GEO of December 12, 2024 stated that the cancellation of the elections was an extraordinary event and that it was adopted because the law of financing of the election campaigns does not contain provisions in case of the cancellation of the elections. The money was transferred to all parties and candidates by the end of last year.

The control carried out by AEP earlier this year came to the conclusion that the parties cannot use the amounts in the subsidy and then have the right to be reimbursed.

“The state gave the money through the subsidy. If you spent the amount, it does not give you again by reimbursement. This is the law of the parties, the GEO does not apply otherwise.

The reports submitted by the PNL to the Permanent Electoral Authority, consulted by HotNews.ro, show that the party transferred to the campaign account of the candidate Nicolae Ciuca 14.1 million lei. This is the amount now imputed by the authority.

The legal payment term is 30 days, according to the legal procedure.

The Snoop.ro investigative site presented, in February 2025, the financial situation of the PNL which accumulated debts or amounts to pay over 30 million euros.

Ilie Bolojan ordered at his installation as interim president of the party a financial audit, which has not been presented so far to the leaders of organizations. Party sources claim that the presentation of the audit will be done next week, before the Congress on July 12.
