The Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) announced on Thursday that it had retained a major in Ukrainian air forces suspected of espionage in favor of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB, former KGB), writes the Ukrainian press..

The alleged spy, arrested during a “special operation” in the Liov region, was recruited through his ex -wife. The woman worked as a military officer, and currently cooperates with Russian forces, in the city of Melitopol (from the Southeastern Ukrainian region of Zaporojie), under occupation, the investigators of the SBU say.

According to SBU, the detained officer was a “mandate” of the FSB and gathered the coordinates of operational aerodromes, logistics centers and maintenance centers used by Ukrainian fighters. If the operation had succeeded, Russia intended to launch rockets and drones on those locations, investigators say.

SBU stated that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the head of the Ukrainian army and that the Ukrainian agent arrested was supervised by Aleksandr Belodedov, an officer from the special Alpha operations unit that is part of the FSB.

The Ukrainian authorities also say that they intercepted the agent before it caused any injury and that they documented his discussions with the Russian secret services, while ensuring the security of the targeted military objectives.

The suspect was accused of high treason committed in a war by a group of persons, in accordance with the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The officer of the Ukrainian Air Force will remain in arrest and risks life imprisonment, as well as the confiscation of goods, if found guilty by justice, notes The Kyiv Independent.

His ex -wife was also charged for betrayal during the war, in accordance.
