Mihail Gudkov, the deputy head of the Russian navy, received distinctions for military actions against Ukraine and was accused of Kiev of war crimes, writes Reuters.
Major General Mihail Gudkov, the deputy chief of the Russian Navy, who also led a brigade against Ukraine, was killed in the Kursk region of Russia, said Oleg Kojemiako, the governor of an eastern East Russia region.
Ukrainian unofficial military and Ukrainian military channels have previously reported that Gudkov was killed with 10 other soldiers in a Ukrainian attack on a Korenevo command post in the Kursk region, which is adjacent to Ukraine.
He is one of the highest Russian military officers killed by Ukraine since Moscow launched the widow war against Ukraine in 2022.
Kojemiako said in a statement that Gudkov was killed “fulfilling his duty as an officer” with others and expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
“When he became the deputy chief of the Navy, he did not cease to visit the positions of our sailors personally,” Kojemiako told Telegram.
Gudkov received distinctions for military actions against Ukraine and was accused by Kiev of war crimes.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was appointed deputy commander of the Navy in March, according to a statement published on the Kremlin website.
Gudkov led a brigade of Marine of the Pacific fleet of Russia, who fought in Kursk.
Part of Kursk was captured by Ukrainian forces in an offensive surprise in August 2024, before Russia declared earlier this year that pushed Ukrainian military and completely released the region.
