The high school is over, the results were displayed at the BAC, the admission to the faculty follows. But what do you do when you do not know what you want to become “when you are big” and you do not have any consuming passion to guide you towards a certain type of study? Or, if you have it, you're afraid you won't be able to make money from it. The good news is that you don't have to know everything from now on. Alexandru Radu, educational counselor at Future Minds, explains in the interview below how you can discover step by step what really suits you – not through magic or luck, but through curiosity, trials and introspection. And if you are looking for a passion, you must know that it does not come at once, but it is built, writes the site all.
A journal with the things you like or attract your attention can help you greatly to realize what motivates you and what you would like to explore next. But Radu draws attention: the passion, no matter how strong, is not enough, if you do not bind a concrete and serious work skills.
He also says that it is normal to have a plan B – this does not mean that you do not trust yourself, but that you take your life seriously. A message to take home, for both teenagers and parents: good choices are made when you know yourself. And for that, you need time, patience and a bit of guide.
All about mothers: How can young people identify their real passions, beyond the influences of the moment or the social pressure?
Alexandru Radu, educational counselor: To begin with, I would like to discuss “passions”, an increasingly present term in career discussions. In Romanian, passion is generally associated with a very strong affective state. Putting a lot of emphasis on identifying passions, we often feel a real pressure in finding them, discovering that field or that activity that arouses eager feelings. The truth is that very few people develop a real passion for something.
Identifying real passions requires two things: introspection and experimentation. Passions are not always obvious at first sight and can be masked by trends, young people being extremely influential by them or by the expectations that those around them are towards them. Yes, it's true, introspection is not easy for today's young people. First of all, it requires solitude, a phenomenon almost non -existent in their lives, given that they are permanently connected through social networks. The constant noise of the notifications, the social comparison and the pressure of being always “present” can suffocate the inner voice, essential to really understand what motivates you and fulfills you. Here, parents or career counselors can help quite a lot, creating a favorable framework for this self-discovery, causing them to guided discussions, facilitating various experiences or validating their uncertainties.
There are enough things that young people can do alone. First of all, to notice what captivates them. What are the activities that make them lose the notion of time, ignore notifications on the phone? What makes them feel fulfilled, don't exhaust? These can be strong indications for certain not very obvious passions. To reflect on the moments of authentic joy. Think of activities that made them smile, even if they were not “productive” or “cool”. Maybe it was about solving a complex problem, helping someone, creating something new, learning an abstract thing, “crafting” to any technical thing or drawing.
To experience various fields, involving themselves in all kinds of extracurricular activities. And here we talk about volunteering for causes that find them interesting or I think, clubs, workshops, personal projects, internships. Not to be limited only to what is familiar and comfortable, just testing, they can discover new interests. To talk to people from various professions, finding directly from the source that involves a certain job. Sometimes a passion can be hidden in an area that they would not have thought, simply because of the lack of information, natural for someone of their age. Moreover, these interactions with real professionals can clarify or disassemble the various myths or rumors related to the respective fields. A concrete tool that young people can use is to have a “journal of passions”. Where to write down what activities they bring joy, what are the things they like to talk about or to inform. Over time, patterns will appear that will help them form a better perspective on passions.
More, on everything.
