The data of a study conducted by the Romanian Police show that adolescents access the Internet daily, and their activities are aimed at communication, entertainment and documentation. However, behind the frequent use, serious vulnerabilities are hidden.
One of the most worrying conclusions is that nearly 1 in 6 teenagers acknowledges that he has been tempted to accept risky challenges on the Internet. The police warn that these behaviors can have serious consequences.
“There were cases of children who have responded to such challenges and who resulted in the most unfortunate effects, including serious injuries and serious repercussions. This is why we felt the need to monitor this aspect too ”, said Chief Commissioner Anca Cosmir from the IGPR.
Despite the risks, about 75% of the students interviewed claim that they feel safe online, while 23% say they have a low perception of safety in the digital environment.
The study of the Romanian Police aimed to identify the behaviors that can transform the Internet into an uncertain space for children and adolescents, emphasizing the evolution of computer crime during 2020–2025. The most common threats include cyber attacks, online challenges and child pornography.
At the same time, computer frauds and phishing attempts have increased by over 10% in the last year, according to the National Directorate for Cyber Security.
The study was conducted between February 11 and March 14, 2025, on a sample of 1,351 students between the ages of 10 and 18.
Authorities recommend parents to be vigilant, to talk openly with children about online activity and to constantly monitor the platforms they use.
