Doctors of the Krasnoyarsk cardiocenter saved a 6-month-old girl from Buryatia with a comprehensive heart disease-defects in the interventricular and atrial partitions, as well as an open arterial duct.

The child was born in a prematureck with body weight 1800 grams and was immediately transferred to artificial ventilation of the lungs. Six months later, the baby was brought to our cardiocenter, where, despite the extreme severity of the condition – heart and respiratory failure – it was decided to perform surgical treatment. This was the only chance to save the girl’s life.
Since she was for a long time on Ivl, the doctors had to painstakingly, day after day, train lungs and try to transfer to independent breathing.
“Despite the fact that we have extensive experience in nursing heavy patients, this is the first time when the child after 6 months of being on the artificial ventilation of the lungs, that is, from the moment of birth, was operated on and was able to switch to independent breathing, said the anesthetist-resuscitator of the FC Krasnoyarsk Ivan Afanasyev. -Due to the long-term presence of Ivl, the girl developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia, the inflammatory process in the lungs. The respiratory muscles, the diaphragm are atrophied, they had to be trained. We were worried that when disconnecting from the Ivl, the child would not have the strength to breathe independently – the muscles do not work. Gradually, we reduced ventilation parameters, sanitized, controlled the state of the lungs and such a pedantic approach allowed us to win. ”
Ivan Afanasyev, more than 20 years In children's resuscitation, he noted that for his practice this is the first such case when, since birth, being in an Ivl for six months, the child was able to breathe himself.
“I do not cease to be surprised at the possibilities of the human body. Initially, I was quite critical of the possibility of an extubation of the child, to the fact that we will be able to launch the lungs. This is akin to a miracle. The surgeons decided on the operation – this is also a feat, not everyone will take such a patient on the table, ”the doctor emphasized.
After the girl managed to translate to independent breathing, her condition stabilized, she went recover Ulan-Ude.
