Students and students will protest on Sunday, in the capital, compared to the decrease of the scholarship fund, and they will go from the University Square to the Government headquarters.
“Sunday, 29.06.2025, from 8:00 pm, the National Alliance of Student Organizations of Romania (ANOSR), together with the National Council of Students (CNE) and the Youth Council (CTR), continues the protests against the decrease of the scholarship fund for students and students!”, Anos.ro announced.
ANOSR representatives announced that students, students, young people and other supporters will start from the University Square to the Victoria Palace, to remind the Government that “limiting the support mechanisms for students and students only perpetuates the obstacles that people from the socio-economic groups are in the study, university dropout and early school leaving ”.
They specify that education is an investment, not an expense and should be treated as such by the decision makers, to ensure equal opportunities in all society.
“Tomorrow leaders are among the generations of students and students whose future is questioned by the unrighteous austerity measures. Not from scholarships, esteemed politicians!” We start from the University Square to the Government headquarters, for education! ”, Said the students' representatives.
Protests Thursday and Friday
The students also protested on Thursday in Victoriei Square, in the Capital, but also in several university centers in the country, compared to the intention of the executive to reduce the funds allocated for scholarships and implicitly the number of beneficiaries.
The next day, the students and students picked the headquarters of the Ministry of Education as a sign of dissatisfaction with the reduction of scholarships.
The Minister of Education, Daniel David, told them on Thursday if they were in their place, and he would protest, as he is convinced that a rational and decent student, if he were in his place, would do what he does.
David said the scholarships are exceptional situations to encourage the educational process.
“I keep the social ones, because we have the school dropout so high, and the merit, let's go to merit. I think 15% of a class, with the new note, the lowest note, I think for merit is a decent thing,” said the minister.
How to change school scholarships
On Wednesday, Education Minister Daniel David announced that the school scholarship system is to be reorganized. The new proposed formula involves retaining only two categories of scholarships:
- Social scholarships, intended for students from vulnerable environments, will continue to include the support given to minor mothers. These scholarships will be managed by the local social assistance authorities, based on a methodology initiated by the ministry.
- The merit scholarships will be awarded to students with averages of at least 9 (currently 9.50), within 15% of the total students in a class (currently a 30% limit). After the reorganization of the Olympics and competitions, the winners' prizes will be increased.
Thus, four types of scholarships will be cut – those for the Olympics (I and II), the technological ones, and those for minor mothers will be included in the social scholarships.
