At least 231 people lost their lives following the collapse on April 8 of the roof of the Jet Set disco in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, announced the Minister of Interior Faride Raful, at a press conference, AFP, taken over by Agerpres.
“I confirmed that the number of victims who died in the accident is 231: 221 were registered on the spot, and another 10 were registered in hospitals,” the minister said.
Considered the largest tragedy of the century in the Dominican Republic, the disaster is comparable from the 2005 fire victims produced at a Higuey prison, in the east of the country, in which 136 detainees died.
The roof of the disco collapsed on April 8, on 00:44 (04:44 GMT) while between 500 and 1,000 people attended a concert held by the Merenge Rubby Pérez star, who died in this accident. About 189 people were saved.
The presidency announced the creation of a commission of national and international experts to determine the causes of the accident.
In a first balance sheet announced one day after the catastrophe, the authorities announced that at least 98 people were killed and more than 150 were injured.
Among the victims were a provincial governor and the former Dominican baseball player Octavio Del, who played 15 seasons in the Major League Baseball. Del, 51 years old, died on the way to the hospital after being taken out of the rubble.
During Thursday, it was announced that at least 218 people lost their lives, the authorities also announcing that they stop the search operations.
