Fita Day

Fitt in Rus' was nicknamed St. Vita – a martyr of the period of early Christianity.

Saint Vit is especially known in Europe. In Germany, there was even a belief that dancing in front of a saint’s statue on his memory allowed to find health and get rid of diseases. Among the dancers, patients with a nervous disease were often found, and the dancing subsequently received the name “dance of St. Vita.”

In Rus', peasants watched this day. “Rain on Fita is bad for life,” the people said. It was believed that after this day it was impossible to sow more: “Who sows after Fita, it happens – bread does not ripen.”

But on Fita (Vita), oats are especially zealous. Therefore, they began to protect the fields from cattle, and cattle from juicy greenery. If this is not done, pets can overeat fresh shoots on the bread field, which threatens them with diseases, or even death. “Patrukha belly was stuffed, she will fall into the stable – she won’t get to her feet,” people said. It was also customary to pray to St. Vita for the protection of cattle from any other misfortune.
