MTS tested a balloon with a base station to provide communications to remote areas

April 3 16:20

MTS announces the start of work on test projects to provide telecommunications services using unmanned aerial vehicles in remote areas where there is no mobile communication. The first step was testing an aerostat with an LTE base station installed on it in the city of Volsk, Saratov region.

During the tests, the balloon, secured by cables from a car trailer, rose 300 meters. The radio module with a broad-directional antenna provided coverage in the LTE 2100 MHz standard within a radius of 10 kilometers at a speed of 30 Mbit/s. The base station was located on the ground and connected to the radio module with an optical cable.

MTS General Director Inessa Galaktionova noted that with the help of various unmanned aerial systems it is possible to quickly and at low cost organize temporary but stable communications over water areas, in remote and sparsely populated areas.

“The balloon allows you to quickly deploy mobile communications and the Internet in almost any place where there are dirt roads, but there is no connection itself. During testing, our engineers were convinced that such a flying base station is capable of providing, regardless of the complexity of the terrain, more effective coverage compared to a conventional mobile base station,” added Inessa Galaktionova.

In the future, such solutions may become a link between ground infrastructure and communication satellites.
