The Pentagon has successfully tested a long -range radar in Alaska, capable of detecting missiles from Russia or China. The radar has a chance to become part of the “Golden Dome” missile shield in the future, Reuters notes.
According to the Pentagon, the Long Range Discrimination (LRDR) radar managed to detect, track and transmit data on a test rocket – a scenario used to simulate a real threat.
The American radar with a long range of action located in the center of Alaska was built by Lockheed Martin, as part of the existing system of missile Ground-Based Midcourse Defense. This system is designed to enhance the efficiency of interceptors in Alaska and California, which are currently in alert to bring down missiles launched by Iran or North Korea.
The test was performed on Monday, at the base of Clear Space Force Station in Alaska, by the US missile (MDA), in collaboration with the US Space Force and the US Nordic Command.
During the exercise, a target developed by the MDA was launched from the air above the North Pacific Ocean and traveled over 2,000 kilometers off the southern coast of Alaska, being followed by LRDR radar.
The “Golden Dome” missile shield aims to create a network of satellites capable of detecting, following and intercepting enemy missiles.
Inspired by the Israeli system “Iron Dome”, the American program is facing political controversies and uncertainties regarding the financing, due to the very high estimated costs. According to current plans, the shield would become operational in January 2029, but several experts question the feasibility of this term and the necessary budget.
On May 20, US President Donald Trump said he chose a design for the Golden Dome missile defense, worth $ 175 billion, and named a general forces to run this ambitious program.
