The extinguishing of Russian gas by introducing a ban on its import will be a more durable solution than sanctions – announced the EU Commissioner for Energy Dan Joergensen. On Tuesday, the European Commission will come out with this solution. Joergensen also believes that the EU will not return to import after the war.

Minister for Climate Paulina Hennig-Kloska, who in connection with the Polish presidency conducted a meeting of energy ministers on Monday in Luxembourg, reminded that Europe paid too high a price for its addiction to Russian exports. “Each euro that we spend on Russian fossil fuels is then used by Russia for its reinforcement, and thus against Europe. We certainly do not want to make the same mistake twice,” she said.
“We propose a ban, not sanctions, because sanctions must be extended, and the ban is a ban – it will apply until someone decides to bear it,” said Joergensen. As he emphasized, the photo of the ban will require an exit by the European Commission with a legislative initiative, which would then have to be accepted by member states in the EU Council and the European Parliament.
“In my opinion, even if there is a room, and we all hope that it will happen soon, it will not lead to the fact that we will start importing Russian gas again. This would be a very unreasonable decision, because it would simply be a supplement to the treasury of Putin with money” – said the commissioner.
Although the ban will be a more durable solution than sanctions, its introduction will only require a majority qualified among member countries (15 countries “for 65 % of the EU population) instead of unanimity, which is required in the case of sanctions and their each time (Current sanctions for Russia require extension every six months).
On Monday, the Danish commissioner presented a plan for the extinguishing of Russian raw materials. First of all, the European Commission intends to propose legislative proposals regarding the departure of gas – this will happen on Tuesday. Then he will propose the termination of supplies related to nuclear energy. Joergensen at a press conference did not want to determine whether this proposal would appear this year.
It is expected that on Tuesday, the EC will propose to introduce at the end of the year a ban on concluding short -term contracts such as the import of Russian gas and gas pipelines. Long -term contracts, also on LNG, are to be terminated at the end of 2027.
