From May, 53 of 54 African countries can conduct duty-free trade with China. The decision was announced by the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing. The program does not cover Eswatini, which maintains contacts with Taiwan. The introduced preferences constitute an extension of the customs policy applicable from 2024. So far, Beijing has maintained duty-free trade with the least developed African countries, now the list has been extended to include those considered more developed. The exemptions will be valid for two years.

Is China buying influence in Africa? They tempt you with free trade

The decision of the authorities in Beijing means that the abolition of customs duties will apply to all countries on the continent maintaining formal diplomatic relations with the PRC. Eswatini, one of 12 countries in the world that recognizes Taiwan, was excluded from the program.

In a statement published on Tuesday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stressed that the zero tariff policy is to provide Africa with development opportunities in times of global challenges. Attention was also drawn to the need to build a stronger community of interests in the face of global protectionism.

According to experts quoted by the BBC, this is a deliberate political move intended to show “how China treats its friends compared to Taiwan's friends“.

China lifts tariffs for Africa despite huge deficit

China presents itself as a country facilitating trade and an African-friendly economic partner, unlike Donald Trump and the USA, said Lauren Johnston, a researcher from the AustChina Institute, quoted by the station.

However, experts indicate that the structure of China's trade with Africa remains a challenge. The value of this exchange in 2025 was nearly USD 350 billion. Africa has a deficit of PLN 102 billion, which in 2025 was 65 percent higher. greater than the year before. Africa mainly exports natural resources to China.

The Chinese communist authorities recognize Taiwan as their territory and do not rule out the use of force to take control of the island. Beijing, as part of its one-China policy, does not establish diplomatic contacts with countries that recognize Taiwan.
