Romania could have a record harvest of wheat. The largest production of the last three decades, expected in the agricultural season 2025-2026

Romania would record the largest wheat harvest since 1997. Estimates show that, in the agricultural season 2025-2026, which will start on July 1, wheat production could reach 12.2 million tonnes, a significant leap than the 10.2 million tonnes estimated for the current season.

This growth is placed on account of the upper yields per hectare and the extension of the cultivated surfaces, according to an analysis by the ARGUS Media consulting company and cited by Bloomberg. The report was published on Monday, June 16, after a field assessment of the cultures from the beginning of June.
Romania thus strengthens its status as key player on the cereals market in the European Union, but also globally. According to the data of the European Commission, in the first months of this season, Romania has exported more wheat than France, a country that, traditionally, holds the first place in the EU. The decrease in French production was caused in 2024 by excessive rainfall.
In addition, the importance of Romania in international wheat trade is also underlined by the decision of the American stock operator CME Group Inc. to use the prices in the Romanian and Bulgarian ports for the new futures contracts on the Black Sea wheat. The decision comes after the suspension of contracts based on the Ukrainian wheat, in the context of the war in the region.
According to Argus Media experts, wheat harvesting in Romania would start in the next four weeks, depending on the region. “Later than last year, because the colder weather slowed the development of plants,” It is shown in the report of the analysts from Argus Media.
However, the weather forecasts indicate a warmer and drought weather in the next period, a favorable climate for the completion of the agricultural cycle.
