“May-Day” call less than a minute before collapse

The captain of the flight Air India 171, who was destined for London, sent an emergency call less than a minute before the plane collapsed, according to information provided by the Indian authorities. The Aviation Ministry of India said that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane reached a maximum height of 650 feet after take-off, but then started to descend quickly, hitting the ground about two kilometers away from Ahmedabad Airport.

At a press conference held on Saturday, the authorities confirmed that the pilot Sabharwal sent the “Mayday” signal shortly after the plane took off on Thursday at 1:39 pm. The control of air traffic responded to the emergency call, however, did not receive any response from the pilot, and the plane collapsed in seconds.

The accident happened in Meghani Nagar, an area just two kilometers from the airport. The 227-ton plane crashed into a student dormitory where medical students and their families lived. Only one man from the 242 people on board survived absolutely miraculously, the rest losing their lives in one of the worst aviation accidents in India in recent decades.

The collision also caused the death of at least three medical students and the wife of a pregnant doctor, as well as several workers and traders in the area.

Final report could be ready over three months

Although the authorities were not in a hurry to provide hypotheses about the causes of the accident, they promised that each theory carried will be thoroughly investigated.

The black box of the plane has been recovered and is being analyzed by investigators, who estimate that the final report on the causes of collapse will be ready in about three months.

“The decoding of this black box will give a thorough perspective on what would have happened in fact during the collapse process”, said RAM Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Saturday, Minister of Civil Aviation.

A team of British experts in aviation accidents, which arrived on Friday, June 13, at AHMEDABAD to support the investigation, also contributes to investigating the incident.

On Saturday morning, while investigators continued to scoot through the wreck, another corpse was recovered from under the wing of the plane, and the authorities officially announced that the number of the dead increased to at least 274.

“I simply cannot bear the thought”

During this time, the families of those who were in the collapsed plane continued to gather at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, where the dead were brought, while anger and frustration increased due to delay in teaching the bodies of loved ones.

Anil Patel, who lost his 30-year-old son and Nora, 28, was more and more agitated and dissatisfied with the delay. He counted among the hundreds of relatives who sent DNA samples to help identify his son's body, but said he had not received any information since then.

“We still do not know exactly when we will receive the body”, The man said, who confessed that the son and the nine were “everything left to me”, after his wife died of cancer six years ago. Although he had moved to London two years ago, his son was talking to him daily through Video-Call.

“Even yesterday, when I was in front of the autopsy block, I could feel the smell of carbonized bodies from the inside.” said Patel. “It is difficult to accept that my son is lying there. I just want to bring them home as soon as possible. The longer they will be damaged. The more they will deteriorate. said the father devastated by pain, quoted by The Guardian.

Indentification of victims by DNA profile

On the other hand, the authorities explain that due to the strong impact, but also the fire that broke out, the victims can only be identified based on the DNA profile.

The only survivor of the tragedy, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, was admitted to the Hospital in Ahmedabad and, according to doctors, his condition is rapidly improving. It is estimated that it will be discharged soon, after receiving the necessary care for recovery.

“We are dealing with at least 250 samples and, for each match, we have to make cross checks in relation to the whole basin. It is an elimination process, which naturally requires time,” He said an official, emphasizing that the team at the hospital worked all night to accurately match the DNA of the corpses.

The only surviving passenger, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, whose rescue from death was described as a “miracle” by experts, is still under observation in the Ahmedabad hospital, and doctors say he feels very good and will be discharged soon.
