Snake holiday

In Rus' there was a belief that on this day “snakes are accumulated, go by train to a snake wedding.” It was very dangerous to kill the reptiles crawling through the forests: it was believed that the snake relatives would brutally take revenge on anyone who would harm them, and not a single healer could save them from snake poison on this day.

In Rus' there was a belief that snakes are closely connected with some plants, and that they are able to influence each other. Many people often wore a piece of marine root in the incense – they attributed the ability to drive the snakes. It was also believed that if early in the morning on sunny edges to scatter fresh twigs of the root, then the snakes rush to them, they would eat everything and die soon. But ash could not kill the reptile – but he was able to deprive him of his strength and the opportunity to bite. An emerald was endowed with the same property – although, of course, this stone was not available to everyone.

It was customary to plant beans on the snake holiday. Before that, they were soaked in winter water, which was collected in forest ravines, where snow lies for a long time.
