Jen is not a very old currency, because the first banknotes appeared only in 1872. They replaced the existing local currencies, which were different depending on the feud. Interestingly, the name “Jen” comes from the word “round”, which of course refers to the shape of coins.
In the first years of its existence, Jen was associated with a parity of gold. For one yen you could get 1.5 grams of gold. The Bank of Japan left in 1931 from this merger. However, it should be noted that after Japan lost World War II, Japanese Jen was associated with the American dollar in 1949. 360 JPy received for one dollar. This connection was lifted in 1971.
An interesting fact regarding Japanese coins is that the dates stamped on them mean in which year of the current emperor they were broken.
