Significant damages were recorded on Monday in Bucharest and in Ilfov county due to the storm. Streets and houses were flooded, and the wind broke trees and cables. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued several successive storm code warnings.

According to a balance sheet published by the Emergency Department, until 8:00 pm, over 800 requests were registered by calling the unique emergency number 112. Over 250 situations have been resolved or are being resolved, the Emergency Inspectorate (ISU) Bucharest-Ilfov reports in a statement.

To inform the population, RO-allert messages were sent to the affected areas. Messages with recommendations for the population were also transmitted through the institutional channels of communication and street electronic panels.

Firefighters who were free, called to work

According to ISU Bucharest-Ilfov, due to the large number of interventions, the firefighters who were in free shifts were called to work, to supplement the herds. Over 550 firefighters acted both to eliminate the negative effects caused by the storm and for the other types of risk.

To manage emergency situations, they are allocated to these interventions:

  • 56 vehicles for extinguishing with water and foam (equipped with saws);
  • seven vehicles of unloading;
  • 64 motor pumps.

Immediately after the resolution of an intervention the crews are redistributed to another waiting request, the ISU said. The main types of interventions are those for removing water from households, housing and road, as well as removing the trees on the road or on cars.

Bucharest, hit by the storm

A strong storm, which lasted about an hour, caused significant damage to Bucharest and in Ilfov county after the significant amount of water flooded the streets. Public transport was affected after trams could no longer advance due to water on the road.

The water also entered the subway and in a mall in Sector 6. Also, air traffic was disturbed by the storm. The Bucharest residents received, on Monday, a Red Message of Powerful Vijelie, electric discharges and wind gusts for 15.28-16.20.

The rains of Monday have brought in Bucharest record water, announces the APANOVA operator, which specifies that the amounts of rainfall exceeding 43 liters per square meter were recorded, isolated exceeding 70 l/sqm, and in some areas there were peaks of over 120 l/sqm, after which the floods were recorded. “During this interval, a pluvial event was registered that exceeded, from the point of view of the frequency of appearance, the frequency every 100 years,” it is stated in a press release of Apa Nova.
