There are many myths about the dangers of reading in poor lighting and at close range. An ophthalmologist who practicing an ophthalmic surgeon of the Center for Visual Restoration in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, who performed more than 20 thousand operations on the laser vision correction, Vitaly Vladimirovich Ivanov, in a conversation with IA EaMedia, shared his opinion on this.
According to the expert, there is no scientific evidence that reading in poor lighting or at a close distance of less than 30 cm negatively affects vision. The human eye adapts to the conditions of the twilight and is able to read even in case of insufficient light.
However, Ivanov recommends reading in good light.
“The person’s eye is simply adapted to the conditions of the twilight. But still I advise you to read in good lighting, since in the twilight the eyes are more strained and get tired faster, also trying to make out a poorly visible font a person blinks much less often, which leads to dry eyes,” the ophthalmologist notes.
Thus, although there is no direct harm from reading in poor lighting or at close range, it is recommended to prefer reading in good light in order to avoid unnecessary eye tension and possible uncomfortable sensations.
