In Krasnoyarsk “Roevoy Ruche” they told how animals endure Siberian frosts

Employees of the Krasnoyarsk flora and fauna park “Roev Ruchey” explained how animals cope with the Siberian cold. According to zoologists, winter does not pose a danger for most inhabitants – back in September, heat-loving species were transferred to heated rooms, and those who did not mind the frost remained outside.

Experts call bison and musk oxen real champions of survival in the cold. The bison has a two-layer fur coat: long guard hairs repel snow, and the thick undercoat acts like a thermos. In winter, these animals eat almost half as much as in summer, using energy sparingly.

Musk oxen, according to park employees, wear perhaps the warmest fur coat in the animal world. Their downy undercoat is eight times warmer than sheep's wool, and the guard hair reaches a length of 60–90 centimeters. This “clothing” allows them to withstand frosts down to −60°C.

Both species go into an energy-saving mode in winter – the heart rate decreases and metabolism slows down. This is not hibernation, but a state close to it.
