French President Emmanuel Macron will make an official visit on June 15 to Greenland to “strengthen cooperation” with this autonomous territory of Denmark, coveted by Donald Trump, Elysée Palace announced on Saturday.
He will move there “at the invitation” of the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and the Danish prime minister, Mette Frederiksen, with whom he will meet “in common”, the French Presidency said in a statement.
The three leaders will discuss “Security in Northern Atlantic and Arctic, as well as topics related to climate change, energy transition and security of critical minerals,” said French presidency.
This visit aims to “strengthen cooperation with Greenland in these fields and to contribute to strengthen European sovereignty,” she points out.
Emmanuel Macron, who will then join the G7 summit in Canada, will be the first head of foreign state to visit this territory from the annexation threats of the US President.
Donald Trump has said several times from his return to the White House in January, that he wants to take over “in one way or another” on the huge Arctic territory, rich in mineral resources and strategically located.
The US Vice-President, JD Vance, made a visit to the Pituffik's space in March at the end of March and pleaded for the need for American control over the island, accusing the Danish authorities of neglecting their own territory and saying that Washington can no longer ignore the Chinese and Russian goals in the area.
