Minimum punishments for hitting and other violence were doubled
Among the most important changes made by the new law are the doubling of the minimum punishments provided in the Criminal Code for the offense of “hit and other violence ”; increase the amount of the criminal fine at a value between 60 lei and 600 lei/day/fine; Improving the normative framework regarding the protection order, including by increasing the punishments for the persons who have previously committed an offense of violating the measures ordered by the protection order.
The initial form of the draft law was submitted to the Senate in October 2024, by Alexandru Nazare, along with a group of senators, including Mihail Veștea, Vlad Pufu and Raluca Ioan, as well as other liberal senators. The legislative proposal modifies and complements several normative acts, in order to combat violence.
“Our tolerance to any form of violence must be zero. From this premise we started when, as a senator, we developed and submitted in the Parliament the law” Romania without violence “, being intrigued by the fact that street violence, family violence or violence seemed to be things with which we have to get used to it. Deposited by us during the year 2024 they would be adopted in an emergency.said Alexandru Nazare, president of Panuropa Romania.
According to a Eurostat study, Romania ranks 4th in the EU on the extent of violence. Data show that at European level, 31% of EU women reported physical or sexual violence in adult life. Among those between 18–29 years, the percentage reaches 35%. At the same time, 18% of women who had a partner were victims of physical or sexual violence, the percentage reaching 32% if we include psychological violence.
At the global level, in 2023, 140 women and girls were killed daily by an intimate partner or family member.
“As President Paneuropa Romania, in addition to the strategic projects that I coordinate internationally, I will continue public campaigns against violence, consumption and drug trafficking, against organized crime groups that terrorize many local communities. I am convinced that, through a legislation that severely punish these offenses, Through public authorities involved and through the strong support of civil society we will be able to meet these goals,“Added Alexandru Nazare, president of Panuropa Romania.
